Basic Information
With the most diverse landscape of all the emirates, RAK is marketing itself as one of the premiere tourism draws for potential visitors to the UAE. Several promotional programmes are currently underway to brand the UAE as a top global destination and have so far yielded positive results, with increases in the number of visitors, occupancy rates and average stay length. To date, RAK draws the majority of its guests from Europe, with Britain and Russia showing the most growth.
Location
Ras Al Khaimah is the most northern Emirate of the United Arab Emirates with a large enclave to the south extending from Masafi to the UAE’s southern border with Oman. The city of Ras Al Khaimah nestles at the foot of the Al Hajjar Mountains and is divided by a natural creek into the old town on one side and the new business centre of Al Nakheel on the other.
The Emirate is fortunate to have perhaps the most scenic and most fertile land in the UAE and is strategically located south of the Strait of Hormuz, plus it is only 50 minutes by car north of Dubai.
Population
It may have a population of only 195,000, but it has ambitious growth plans and is pumping money into various projects. Property is the obvious place and 31 real estate developments are underway or at the planning stage. It is also a growing tourist destination, particularly among those already living in the GCC or who want to visit the region but don't want the 'Dubai experience', as it can offer both a beach and mountain experience. The government is predicting that by 2020 its sub-200,000 population will have leapt to 750,000 people or more.
Religion
Arab Islamic culture predominates in Ras Al Khaimah but everyday life is marked with a high degree of tolerance towards a large expatriate community. Islam first arrived in this region during the lifetime of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Communities of Christians and other religious denominations practice their religion freely within the UAE.
Climate
Ras Al Khaimah 's climate is idyllic from November to April with warm sunny days, cool evenings and low humidity. Daytime temperatures range from 18 to 30°C. From May to September the climate is hot with midday temperatures in July and August reaching in excess of 45°C.
